Oscar Schmidt Guitars (Stella, Sovereign, Galiano)

A1056 1056 Stella Concert Guitar ...SUPER CLEAN! Circa 1935. We seldom get Stella guitars in "near mint" cosmetic condition like this one. This guitar has no appreciable playing wear and is pristine! It does have a tiny repaired hairline top crack and a well repaired side crack, but when you pick it up, you would think it's a brand new instrument, not 70 years old! Action is very comfortable. Gold filigree decalcomania rosette, all solid birch construction. Nut width is 1 13/16". Comes with it's original end-opening canvas covered chipboard case. $1850.00  Hear this guitar

A1055 Stella Concert Guitar ....Circa 1933. All birch Stella guitar with silk-screened floral design and gold filigree rosette decal. Very clean all original condition. Embossed "Stella" logo on headstock and early 1930s paper label inside. Neck has been reset and neck is straight, making action very comfortable. This is a "Great Little Stella" with a "Great Big Voice!" Original chipboard case included. (A new hard-shell case for extra $100).  $1395.00  Hear this guitar

A1054 Hawaiian Guitar by Oscar Schmidt ...Circa 1925. This model was offered to mail-order students of the "First Hawaiian Conservatory" as an upgrade from the red sunburst guitar that came free with the course. With the return of a student's "free instrument", a six dollar trade in allowance was offered towards the purchase of a more expensive all koa guitar.  This guitar is Oscar Schmidt's  standard Hawaiian size with a 12 1/2" lower bout. Green "Oscar Schmidt Hawaiian Guitar" paper label is visible through the sound hole. Crack-free koa wood top, sides and back. Inlaid rope pattern rosette, ebonized pear wood fingerboard, rosewood bridge (brass fret-saddle has been moved to improve intonation). Although originally set up with high nut and saddle for lap-style playing, this guitar is now set up for standard "Spanish" style with excellent action and playability. Comes with original chipboard case, which is in very good condition.  $995.00    Hear this guitar

A1053 Galiano Grand Concert Guitar ...Circa 1935. Recent neck set, two small back cracks, one repaired side crack. Sides, back and neck are mahogany; fingerboard and bridge appear to be dyed pear wood. We are not sure what species of wood the maple-bound top is made from, it is unlike any spruce we have seen. One thing is clear, it produces an excellent tone! Dimensions are standard for a grand concert guitar made in the New York shop of Raphael Ciani: 14 3/4" lower bout, 1 3/4" nut width and 26" scale. Older chipboard case. $2250.00            Hear this guitar

A1052 Stella Concert Guitar ...Mid-1920s, all birch "Brown Front" model with gold filigree rosette and "ladies banner" decalcomania (partly worn away). Crack-free all birch construction, recently reset neck. This is an excellent player in very good original condition. Bridge has two filled screw holes and replaced saddle. Nut width is 1 13/16". Comes with a new hard-shell case. $1295.00  Hear this guitar

A1041 Sovereign Concert Guitar - Circa 1935 ...Spruce top, mahogany sides and back,  multi-color marquetry with inlaid Italianate pickguard, unbound fingerboard and headstock, dot position marks. Overall condition is excellent - no cracks or noticeable damage and minimal playing wear. Several “belt-buckle scratches” on back, otherwise, original finish is in great condition. Headstock has a 3/4" square veneer patch below “Sovereign” signature. Fingerboard has been refretted and profile changed from original flat profile to radiused shape. Facsimile rosewood pyramid bridge with compensated saddle. Comes with a new hard-shell case. $2850.00  Hear this guitar

A1038 Stella 7-String Concert Guitar  ...Exceedingly Rare! Original factory issued 7-string guitar, circa 1925. Although certainly a rarity, seven-string guitars were available by special order in the early 20th century. There were two types of 7-string guitars made during the early 20th century: the "Russian 7-string guitar" and the "Hawaiian 7-string guitar". Both are essentially the same except for the way they are tuned. Our example could be either! It has a spruce top, birch sides and back. Excellent crack-free original condition. Seven-string guitars have recently enjoyed a renaissance, with  low bass string tuned to either "B" or "C" (I like tuning it to a "D" and playing my "drop D" repertoire without losing my low E!). Today, many jazz players favor the instrument. Recent neck set with 2 graphite rods installed in neck. Action is superb and intonation is spot-on!  New hard-shell case. $1500.00   Hear this guitar

A1028 Galiano "Orchestra Model" by Oscar Schmidt ...Circa 1935. A very rare model offered by Schmidt in the 1930s, in answer to changing guitar trends. C. F. Martin and Gibson both began offering larger size 14-fret flat-top guitars around 1930. During the same era Oscar Schmidt began testing the waters with instruments like this one. It has a 15 1/4" lower bout and a 14-frets-to-the-body neck. It is very similar to the a fancier Sovereign "Orchestra Model" guitar described on the last page of the 1932 Schmidt catalog. This guitar has an all birch construction. The Gibson influence can be seen in the sunburst top and "fire stripe" faux tortoise pickguard. However, the similarity ends there. This guitar has a much more open, loud "woody" tone, due to it's having Oscar Schmidt's ladder bracing construction. Several professionally repaired cracks. This guitar is a wonderful player with a HUGE sound! A color picture of another example of this model is featured on page 45 of my Stella Guitar Book (and one of the songs on CD that is included with the book features it). Hard-shell case. $1495.00   Hear this guitar

A1025 Stella Jumbo 6-string Copy  ...Recent copy of 6-string version of the Stella "Lead Belly" style jumbo by Pennsylvania luthier Robert Johnston. Spruce top, mahogany sides & back, rosewood fingerboard and pyramid bridge. Truss rod accessible through sound hole. Small repaired side crack, otherwise "mint" condition. This is a very nicely made guitar, perfect for the player seeking an instrument with the panache of a vintage Stella and the durability of a new guitar. Recent hard-shell case included. $1650.00   Hear this guitar

Vintage Guitars - other makes

A1057 Harmony Roy Smeck Professional  ...Circa 1945. Knowing that Harmony made some impressive instruments in the past, I was still completely unprepared for the way this guitar sounds - loud, resonant and powerful! Spruce top, mahogany sides and back, all solid woods throughout. Excellent, crack-free condition. Described as "auditorium size" in the Harmony catalog, the lower bout is 15 1/4" wide. The nut width is 1 11/16", the scale length is 25". It has a straight neck with a fresh neck-set, so the action is close and comfortable. This is one of the all-time best Harmony guitars I've encountered! Older chipboard case. $850.00 Hear this guitar

A1042 National Triolian Resonator Guitar  ....Circa 1931 (Serial number 1979-W). This guitar has a dent-free steel body with classic "Scrapper Blackwell" brown sunburst finish and a bound, dyed maple fingerboard. Ebony nut may be a replacement, otherwise all original. Straight neck, excellent action. Comes with hard-shell case.  $3700.00  Hear this guitar

A1020 Oahu Jumbo, mid 1930s ...Aside from some minor cosmetic differences such as headstock shape and decals, the Oahu jumbo and Kay Kraft jumbo (A1022) are essentially the same. Both have deep sides like a Gibson "Nick Lucas". Average condition. Neck appears to be factory "Spanish" in profile. Three repaired hairline cracks, non original "flat pyramid" rosewood bridge, some finish damage in the area adjacent to bridge, "B.C.Louis" (approximately 1 inch) scratched in top next to treble side of bridge, non-original tortoise pickguard, original tuners replaced with Grover Sta-tite machines. Some bubbling in lower area of the laminated maple back, due to water damage. Excellent action. This is a great player! Older chipboard case. $1550.00  Hear this guitar

A1022 Kay Kraft Jumbo Style A  ...Circa 1935.  These Kay Kraft jumbos are often called the "Poor Man's Nick Lucas" - and for good reasons! They are lightly built, have x-braced tops and have the same deep-body dimensions as a Gibson Nick Lucas Special! This example has had some minor modifications done some time in the past. The original "mother of-toiletseat" peghead overlay has been replaced with rosewood and asymmetrical headstock shape altered. Martin style replacement bridge and 1950 style Gibson pickguard added. Original round neck, crack-free top, sides and back! This is a super nice playing guitar! Older chipboard case.  $1750.00             Hear this guitar

12-String Guitars, etc.

A1051 Holzapfel & Beitel Jumbo 12-string Guitar, circa 1910 ...Model #150. Spruce top, birch sides and back. A basket case when found, this guitar has been restored to excellent playing condition by Mike Hauver. Repaired top and back cracks. Refinished. An excellent player with utterly amazing tone! New TKL hard-shell case. $5,000.00   Hear this guitar   Neil on YouTube playing his 1910 Holzapfel 12-string

A1048 Carl C. Holzapfel Jumbo 12-string Guitar, circa 1930 ...Model #240. One of the cleanest condition Holzapfel 12-string we have seen. Spruce top, mahogany body and neck, herringbone purfling. Holzapfel 12-strings were made in Baltimore and are arguably the best 12-string guitars ever made. Excellent, all original condition. One tiny repaired back crack. Like all Holzapfel 12-strings, it's neck is massive and it has a zero fret. Lower bout is 16 1/8" wide, scale is 25 1/4". This guitar has a huge sound! Action is close and comfortable. Comes with a new hard-shell case (and original chipboard case.)  $9,500.00   Hear this guitar

A1046 Stella #922 12-string guitar, circa 1964 ...The #922 Stella 12-string guitars had been included in the Harmony Company's product lineup since it's introduction in 1940. 1964 was the last year for the Stella #922 12-string model, which had been dropped from the Harmony line in 1958 and reintroduced in 1963.  In 1965, the model was replaced by the much more common #912 Stella 12-string, which had an adjustable truss rod and white screwed-on pickguard. This example is in excellent, all original  condition with neither cracks nor repairs. Freshly re-set neck assures excellent action and playability. Solid birch construction. These latter day Stella 922s came from the factory equipped with a steel reinforced, non-adjustable D-profile neck. Older chipboard case.  $850.00  Hear this guitar

A1047 Stella #912 12-string Guitar , circa 1965 ...Harmony's12-string offerings were expanded in 1965 with the addition of a new Jumbo Harmony Sovereign 12-string (model #1270) and a revamped Stella 12-string (model #912, which replaced the old model #922). Our example of the #912 is date-stamped S-65, signifying that it was produced in Spring of 1965. It is in excellent cosmetic condition with exception of one repaired side crack on bass side upper bout next to heel. Like it's predecessor, the #912 Stella 12-string is all solid birch, but has an adjustable truss rod and white pickguard. Newly re-set neck assures close comfortable action and playability. Older chipboard case.  $650.00                Hear this guitar

A1044 1967 Gibson B25-12 ...Gibson B25-12's from this era are among my all-time favorite post-war 12-strings. I find their size and the short Gibson 24.5" scale to be perfect for finger style country blues - especially the way I play, with bare fingers. Unfortunately, many of these have not survived undamaged, due to having been tuned up to concert pitch with heavy gauge strings. This example in in excellent, all original condition - with no cracks or repairs and close comfortable action. Sunburst spruce top, mahogany sides, back and neck. New hard-shell case.  SOLD      Hear this guitar

A1045 Stella Double Neck Harp Guitar - circa 1910 ....Grand concert size body with a standard six string neck and a second fretless neck with six sub-bass strings. Red spruce top, birch sides and back with faux rosewood finish. Several repaired cracks to the top and back. Original finish throughout. The six sub-bass strings on second neck act as drones, vibrating sympathetically and creating a haunting, almost mystical sound unlike any other guitar I have played. Excellent action and playability. This is truly a remarkable instrument - and such fun to play  $2750.00                            Hear this guitar
